Reducing Parental Conflict (RPC)

Some level of arguing and conflict between parents or carers is often a normal part of everyday life. However, there is strong evidence that frequent, intense and poorly resolved parental conflict can have a negative impact on children’s mental health and long term life-chances. The parental conflict indicator shows 12% of children were living with at least one parent reporting relationship distress. Parental conflict is twice as likely in workless couple-parent families compared to where both parents are working. You can read more about what parental conflict is and the impact on children.

The UK government has developed the Reducing Parental Conflict programme to reduce parental conflict and improve children’s outcomes. Via this programme, the Department of Work & Pensions has launched the Supporting Healthy Parental Relationships Good Practice Guide: this is a tool to support champions in the drive to reduce parental conflict. It aims to give ideas on the planning, delivery, and evaluation of services supporting families to achieve healthy, stronger relationships, both together and apart, for the benefits of their children. It gives examples of what’s worked, as well as useful sources of information for further help for specific areas (as available at the date of release).

The document is divided into 12 sections covering a range of different aspects to raise the profile of healthy relationships at all levels of provision. It includes an appendix with a list of services identified at the time of release as providing resources inclusive of reducing parental conflict. The resources links are not exhaustive and any of those included carry no endorsement. There is a Glossary at the end for any acronyms or terminology used.

The Amity Relationship Toolkit is a flexible and practical resource designed to support and help build professionals' skills for working with parents, children, and families. Positive relationships hold the key to good parenting, which in turn impacts children’s well-being, self-esteem and future life chances. Essentially, it is the people around you that will get you through life’s ups and downs. The Toolkit looks at how professionals can support families to have stronger, healthier relationships with more positive communication to ensure that all parents can be the best they can be.

The Relationship Toolkit is packed with information, tools, and resources to help professionals support parents to communicate better, and provides support with your everyday practice to be more confident and curious about quality family relationships.
